“The festival
has found its place”
Nadja Schildknecht, director of the Zurich Film Festival until 2019, raised Zurich into the premier league of film festival cities. Now she is heading off to new shores. She takes her leave with a fond farewell to the lake and the city on the banks of the Limmat.
Your baby, the Zurich Film Festival, has grown into a teenager and you can let go of its hand. Is there a parting message with which you’d like to send it on its way? Nadja Schildknecht: My best wishes of course. But don’t forget, this teenager doesn’t have to carry on alone. He will continue to be looked after by a well-versed team. Two or three years ago, I wouldn’t have let him go yet. But now the festival has found its place in the world of international film.
Was that your aim at the time? My goodness – we had such visions and dreams, paired with naivety and good luck, as well as lots and lots of hard work and zero support. My business partner Karl Spoerri and I invested our own money into the project. Back then, we never even dreamt that we would be so big one day. But it seems that we did many things right, purely by intuition.
