Switzerland’s mythical national hero Wilhelm Tell and his crossbow are famous far beyond the country’s borders. But Zurich also has a wide repertoire of fabled heroes and stories of its own. These include the legend of Zurich’s patron saints Felix
and Regula (5). The two siblings fled to Zurich in the early 4th century. When they refused to renounce Christianity, they were tortured and executed by the town’s Roman governor. The rock on which the martyrs are said to have been decapitated can still be seen today, below Zurich’s Wasserkirche. After the execution, so the legend goes, they miraculously stood up and carried their heads to their final resting place – where the two towers of the Grossmünster stand tall today.

FOODIE DELIGHTS
It’s true, the Swiss love their cheese and carbohydrates – from fondue and raclette through to rösti. But those who want to sample a typical Zurich speciality are
best served with a plate of Züri-Gschnätzlete (6). Delicate ragout of veal in a smooth mushroom and cream sauce, usually accompanied by a crispy golden rösti. In some ways, you could say the dish is Swiss democracy on a plate – no single ingredient steals the show, the different flavours complement each other to form a harmonious and unostentatious whole. Yet this archetypal Zurich dish isn’t actually as old as one would think. The first mention of a “veal ragout Zurich-style” appears in a cookbook published in 1947 – without mushrooms. TRADITIONELLES ZÜRICH
Ob «Sechseläuten», «Knaben- schiessen» oder «Schifferstechen», Zürich legt Wert auf seine alten Bräuche.
