Concept for the new fountain on Zurichs Münsterplatz:
The large bowl reflects the dimensions of the square, the water inlet focuses
on the top of the church tower and the beauti- fully curved course thematises the
eternal movement of water.
Water is at the heart of recreational life in Zurich. In the urban area alone, more than 1200 fountains provide high-quality drinking water. And there are plenty of idyllic spots along the shores of lake and rivers offering natural beauty and recreation. Here’s a brief
A to Z of top tips for fun days out by, in or on the water.
A FOR ARBORETUM
Trees wherever you look – the 75,000 m2 park near Rapperswil-Jona is a favourite spot for nature and art lovers alike. The outdoor museum of Swiss garden designer Enzo Enea showcases more than 50 trees of 25 different species, all of them native to this climate zone. Some of them are more than 100 years old. The grounds surrounding the arboretum are home to no less than 3000 trees and shrubs, as well as sculptures made by international artists. A feast for the senses! enea.ch/baummuseum
F FOR FOUNTAIN
You will find them hidden away in little courtyards, enthroned in the centre of large squares or adorning winding alleyways in the old town – more than 1200 public fountains provide fresh water in Zurich. Most of the water is sourced
directly from springs situated in the surrounding hills, which were first tapped in the 15th century. So, no need to drag along a heavy bottle when you set
out on your city stroll – Zurich’s fountains are there to quench your thirst around the clock. zuerich.com/brunnen
K FOR KNIES KINDERZOO
What if you could encounter 350 animals in a single day? At Knies Kinderzoo in Rapperswil that’s perfectly possible. The zoo acts
as winter quarters for the animals of the Swiss National Circus and is home to elephants, inquisitive pygmy goats and nimble
squirrel monkeys, all of which can be admired close up.
The main attractions include camel rides, a large adventure
playground, horse-drawn tram rides, dog and horse shows and – unique in Europe – elephant rides.
