ZURICH UNIVERSITIES GO HEAD TO HEAD (D) F The Limmat is also home to the annual Uni-Poly rowing regatta. Modelled on the legendary rowing race between Oxford and Cambridge universities, Zurich uni-
versity and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich have competed against each other in rowing eights since 1945. There are separate categories
for students, teaching staff and alumni. The course measures 600 metres, starting
in the lower lake basin and ending on the Limmat, between Münsterbrücke
and Gemüsebrücke. The regatta draws quite a crowd. On 1 NOVEMBER 2023,
the lecture halls will be conspicuously empty again – they’ll all be at the Uni-Poly rowing race. asvz.ch
SWIMMING «SANTAS» (E)
In early December every year, around 300 intrepid swimmers jump into the icy cold Limmat. Often sparsely clothed in just their swimming costumes and the customary red hat, the «Santas» swim down the Limmat as far as the Oberer Letten river lido. It looks like a crazy undertaking, but it’s for a good cause – each year, the profits are donated to a selected charitable organisation. In 2023, the event
is set to take place on 3 DECEMBER. Anyone who wants to join in needs to move fast – the tickets are in high demand and some are even sold by auction. samichlausschwimmen.ch
FIRMLY SEATED IN THE ROWING BOAT(F)
There’s nothing quite like watching the sun rise on the horizon, surrounded by gently lapping waves. Far and wide all is calm, the only sound is the quiet pat
of the oars against the water. No wonder rowing is such a popular sport. Founded in 1920 by boatbuilder Alfred Stämpfli at his yard in Wollishofen, the rowing club now has over 400 members. In 1951, the club moved to new premises at Mythen- quai, designed by architect Robert Landolt, to accommodate the growing member- ship. Though it was originally only open to men, the club has invited women since 1990 and they now make up half of the membership. The club’s elite teams have won many international competitions, including two Olympic medals. rcz.ch

TRADITIONEN RUND UMS WASSER
